In a transformer, insulating oil (also known as dielectric oil) is used to electrically insulate and cool the active parts. It is part of the "oil-paper" insulation system and helps slow down the degradation of the latter.
Its regular analysis provides information on the status of the transformer.
The characteristics of mineral oils are defined by IEC 60296 (edition 5, 2020) and ASTM D 3487 - 2016.
A distinction is made betweenb inhibited oils, which contain an antioxidant additive, and uninhibited oils.
In France, most insulating oils are uninhibited.
